Maplewood School District launched its first-ever inclusive middle school swim program this weekend at the Oak Grove High School aquatic center, bringing together students of all backgrounds to build confidence and learn water safety.

The smell of chlorine and the echoes of cheering families filled the air on Saturday morning as more than fifty students from Clear Creek, Fairview, Sunny Springs, and Cedar Ridge middle schools prepared to dive in. For many of these young athletes, this was their first time participating in an organized swim team. The Maplewood Splash initiative was designed specifically to break down financial and transportation barriers that often keep diverse families out of competitive swimming.

Maplewood parent Maria Gonzalez stood near the edge of the pool, cheering for her daughter. She said the program has been a life-changing opportunity for her family. We never had access to a pool in our neighborhood, so learning to swim always felt out of reach, Gonzalez explained. Seeing my daughter standing on that block, completely fearless and supported by her teammates, brings tears to my eyes because it shows her that she belongs here just as much as anyone else.

Coach David Jenkins, a physical education teacher at Sunny Springs Middle School, spent the morning giving high-fives and words of encouragement. He noted that the program focuses on much more than just perfecting a freestyle stroke. We are teaching resilience, teamwork, and healthy habits that will stick with these kids forever, Jenkins said. The growth we have seen in just a few short weeks is incredible, and the way these students cheer for each other regardless of what school they attend is exactly what Maplewood is all about.

The district plans to expand the Maplewood Splash program to elementary students at North Park and Riverside next spring, ensuring even younger children can get their feet wet. With continued support from the community and local sponsors providing gear, the district is committed to making sure every child has a lane in the pool. Families interested in joining the spring session can find registration details on the district website starting next month.
