New User Permissions Model
Currently, when assigning a user permissions in Smart Sites, checking the box of a section means that the user will be able to add new sub-pages and/or sub-sections within that section. Many assume it grants access to everything in the section, but it does not.
On the evening of Sunday, February 15, we will be converting all users to a new permissions model. After the transition, users with any section-level boxes checked WILL inherit editing rights to all of that section’s sub-pages and sub-sections. This new functionality will simplify managing user permissions going forward. No longer will you have to edit someone’s account to grant them access to newly created pages in sections they already have rights to.
Recommended Actions
Review your users. If any currently have a section-level box checked but you do NOT want them to inherit rights to everything underneath it, simply uncheck the section-level box and save your changes.
Before and After Example
Example of user permissions before:

What this user's permissions will look like after the migration:

If this was your intention all along, or if it is ok for the user to gain editing access to those extra pages, then NO ACTION IS REQUIRED.
On the other hand, if you do NOT want this user to gain editing access to those extra pages, edit their account by 5pm Eastern on Sunday, February 15 and simply UNCHECK the section-level box (in this example, “Special Programs.”) That way, when the user is migrated, they will retain permission to only edit the single page (“Gifted & Talented” in this example).
Make sure that you review all levels of the hierarchy. If a Tier 1 section box is checked for a user, they will inherit editing rights to everything under that tier.
User Permissions Webinar
On February 4, we conducted a webinar to explain the upcoming changes, why they are beneficial, and the actions you may want to take prior to the transition. We also shared a sneak peek of the completely redesigned user interface for user management!
